About Nordic Explorer

Nordic Explorer is an English-language guide to Finland first and the Nordic countries second, published by Voitto Virta LLC. It has two halves that are meant to be read together.

The live layer answers the questions you have before you go out of the door tonight. Whether the aurora is worth waiting up for, in six places, from four merged official feeds. What the road north is doing, camera by camera, in the order you drive past them. How much light is left. Each number carries the time it was read and a link to the agency that published it, and when a feed goes down the page says so rather than quietly showing you yesterday.

The guides come from vse.fi, a Russian-language guide to Finland that has been written since 2009 by people who moved here and explained the place to friends back home. That voice — practical, specific, mildly wry, first-hand — is what is being carried over. What is not being carried over is the Russia-facing framing: the visa pages, the customs allowances, the border-queue advice and the cross-border trains that no longer run.

What this site will not do

• Publish a time-sensitive fact without a source and a date. Prices, rules and opening hours go stale. Every page says the day it was last checked and against which official page, and the build fails if a page is missing either.
• Show a live number without its timestamp. Enforced in code, not by habit: a component that would render a reading with no time behind it throws at build.
• Embed a camera we are not licensed to. Fintraffic publishes its road cameras under CC BY 4.0 and those we show. Everything else is a link, including the FMI aurora cameras we would most like to show.
• Put an advert inside a verdict. Affiliate links appear below the evidence, never inside it, and they are labelled where they sit.

The Explorer Club

The sister site is Nevada Explorer, which does the same job for the Sierra Nevada: is the pass open, are chains required, what does the camera at Donner Summit show. The two sites share a package that defines how a live reading is formatted, how old it has to be before it is called stale, and what a page does when a feed stops answering — so they behave identically when something breaks, on either side of the world.
